Comparison of the Journey II bicruciate stabilised (JII-BCS) and GENESIS II total knee arthroplasty for functional ability and motor impairment: the CAPAbility, blinded, randomised controlled trial

Abstract: ObjectivesTo determine if a newer design of total knee replacement (TKR) (Journey II BCS) produces superior patient-reported outcomes scores and biomechanical outcomes than the older, more established design (Genesis II).SettingPatients were recruited from an NHS University Hospital between July 2018 and October 2019 with surgery at two sites. Biomechanical and functional capacity measurements were at a University Movement and Exercise Laboratory.Participants80 participants undergoing single-stage TKR.Interven… Show more

“…This randomized controlled trial (RCT) from surgeons in Norwich (UK) compared the Journey II total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to the Genesis II. 4 This is an interesting study as it compares two implants from the same manufacturer (but different generations) to establish if there are any differences in functional ability or motor disability. Overall, a small number of just 80 patients were enrolled in the RCT and underwent randomization.…”

“…Additional prospective studies are needed to better understand the local inflammatory cascade and its association with medium-and longer-term outcomes for TKA patients with different knee deformities and baseline ROM.Journey II bicruciate stabilized (JII-BCS) and GENESIS II total knee arthroplasty: the CAPAbility, blinded, randomized controlled trialJust because things are new and shiny does not necessarily mean they are any better than the tried and tested technology.
