Comparison of the laryngeal mask (LMA™) and laryngeal tube (LT®) with the new perilaryngeal airway (CobraPLA®) in short surgical procedures

Abstract: We conclude that haemodynamic, ventilation and oxygenation variables throughout the surgery were similar with, LMA, LT and PLA, but LT and PLA were easier to insert; LMA and LT caused less mucosal trauma.

“…But we do not consider a 7.5-s difference in insertion time to be clinically important. Although the insertion time for the LMA Classic seems to be longer than expected, it is comparable to findings from previous studies that compared time to insertion of both devices [1,6]. We believe that both devices are similarly easy to insert and are equally effective in achieving a patent airway during general anaesthesia with controlled ventilation.…”

“…There are some reports that the CobraPLA can induce more mucosal damage than other supraglottic airway devices [6,7]. We inflated the cuff until the intracuff pressure reached 60 cmH 2 O.…”

“…Turan et al 20 studied the efficacy of the CobraPLA®, the LMA Classic™, and the Laryngeal Tube LT in 90 healthy patients undergoing short surgical procedures. While insertion times were similar with all three devices, lower success rates, at first insertion attempt, were observed with the LMA Classic™ (57%), as compared to the CobraPLA® (97%).…”
