Comparison of the Prognostic Value of Assessing Tumor Diameter Versus Tumor Volume at Diagnosis or in Response to Initial Chemotherapy in Rhabdomyosarcoma

Abstract: In our analysis, initial tumor size and tumor response were significant prognostic factors in rhabdomyosarcoma, regardless of whether tumor diameter or volume was considered. Three-dimensional tumor assessment was of no greater prognostic value than one-dimensional assessment, neither initially nor after induction treatment.

“…A follow-up study reviewing the same cohort at end of therapy found that complete resolution status does not correlate with improved clinical outcome compared to patients with partial response or no radiographic response to therapy [22••]. It should be pointed out that a recent Italian group study did find a correlation between improved clinical outcome and measurable radiographic tumor response, using either two-dimensional or three-dimensional measurements [23]; however, this was a smaller and more heterogeneous cohort of RMS patients.…”

“…Two studies showed that use of volume in assessment of response to initial therapy did not more accurately predict outcome than did use of single dimension measurements. 11,12 In children with neuroblastoma, Yoo et al 13 evaluated the relationship between primary tumor response and outcome, but did not compare methods of response assessment. Our study, to our knowledge, is the first to compare reduction in volume versus reduction in longest diameter as response measures in children with neuroblastoma.…”

“…Patients with the same stage of disease even showed a big discrepancy in survival. Molecules involved in cancer relapse and prognosis might serve as markers for early detection of metastasis and as a measure for therapeutic intervention (26)(27)(28)(29)(30).…”
