Comparison of the reliability and validity of outcome instruments for cutaneous dermatomyositis

Abstract: Background-Reliable and validated measures of skin disease severity are needed for cutaneous dermatomyositis (DM). CDASI (Cutaneous Dermatomyositis Disease Area and Severity Index), DSSI (Dermatomyositis Skin Severity Index), and CAT (Cutaneous Assessment Tool) skin indices have been developed as outcome instruments.

“…A previous study compared 3 skin‐specific tools, the Cutaneous Dermatomyositis Disease Area and Severity Index (CDASI), the Dermatomyositis Skin Severity Index, and the CAT 20. In that study, 10 dermatologists used these instruments to score the same 12–16 adult patients with DM in 1 session.…”

“…In addition, pruritus may be a prominent feature in dermatomyositis and is helpful as a distinguishing characteristic. Quality-of-life impairment in dermatomyositis is equal to or greater than that observed in other skin diseases [8], including psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.…”

“…It has been shown to have good inter-and intrarater reliability and construct validity in children and adults with dermatomyositis (DM) [21]. Finally, the Cutaneous Dermatomyositis Area and Severity Index (CDASI) scores 16 body areas for erythema, thickness, scaling, excoriation, and ulceration [22]. Gottron's lesions, periungual changes, and alopecia are scored separately.…”
