Comparison of Thoracic Radiographs and Single Breath-Hold Helical CT for Detection of Pulmonary Nodules in Dogs with Metastatic Neoplasia

Abstract: Imaging studies in people indicate that x-ray computed tomography (CT) is a more sensitive technique than thoracic radiography for the detection of pulmonary metastasic neoplasia. Systematic studies comparing CT and thoracic radiographic techniques in veterinary patients have not been performed. The present retrospective study was designed to directly compare the efficacy of these 2 techniques in detecting pulmonary nodules in dogs. Eighteen dogs with histologically confirmed pulmonary metastatic neoplasia had… Show more

“…Intravenous contrast medium administration may assist in delineating pathology in certain cases and is particularly useful for detecting thrombosis associated with thoracic aortic aneurysms. Computed tomography has been shown to be remarkably more accurate than thoracic radiography in detecting small pulmonary nodules as well as assessing the total number and location of nodules (Nemanic et al, 2006). Diagnostic ultrasonography via a trans-hepatic window to avoid the aerated lungs is currently being investigated in our hospital.…”

“…High-field-strength MR imaging scanners are more suited for advanced techniques, such as MR angiography (Labruyère & Schwarz, 2013;Kraft et al, 2007). Special sequences have also been developed to identify particular pathology, such as the diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) used in the Characterisation of ischemic strokes (Warach et al, 1992;Warach et al, 1995;Fisher et al, 1995;Warach et al, 1996;Marks et al, 1996;Lutsep et al, 1997;McConnel et al, 2005;Nemanic et al, 2006). Unlike CT, no ionising radiation hazards are associated with MR imaging.…”

“…Due to its high tissue contrast capability, MRI has become the diagnostic imaging technique of choice to evaluate the brain parenchyma (McConnel et al, 2005;Nemanic et al, 2006;Cerda-Gonzalez et al, 2009;De Risio et al, 2009). …”
