Comparison of three obturation techniques with regard to bacterial leakage

Abstract: Aim: To compare bacterial leakage in root canals obturated with the modified single-cone, lateral condensation, and continuous wave of condensation techniques. Methods: Distobuccal root canals of maxillary molars were shaped up to ProTaper F2 and obturated with modified singlecone, lateral condensation or continuous wave of condensation technique. Two-chamber bacterial model using Enterococcus faecalis was employed for bacterial leakage evaluation for 30 days. The chi-square test was applied to evaluate differ… Show more

“…E. faecalis has been commonly found in filled canals with radiographic evidence of peri-radicular periodontitis or without injury than in those with a radiolucent area, suggesting that the entry of bacteria may occur after filling, which is consistent with the findings of this study 23 . The observation of similar percentages of E. faecalis leakage, regardless of the obturation technique, reinforces this idea 24 . Confirmation of the identity of E. faecalis by PCR has proven to be more sensitive than conventional E. faecalis culture methods.…”

“…The result found for the ProTaper Next is in accordance with a study by Tewari et al (11) and Krokidis at al. (20), who also observed a better performance of this system compared to other automated systems and manual technique. The parallelogram shaped cross-section of the instrument shapes the root canal asymmetrically, with only two points of contact being present during the continuous rotation.…”

“…In this way, it should also be mentioned that the use of automated instruments affects the interpretation of the shaping in the apical region compared to the manual instrumentation. After the mechanical preparation, it can notice that cones of larger diameter than that of the last instrument can be used, that is, a size 25 file allows the use of cones with apical diameter up to size 35 (20). Thus, the root canal final preparation should be related on shaping promoted by automated systems rather than on that of the last instrument used (20,21).…”
