Comparison of Toxic Metal Concentrations in Antidiabetic Herbal Preparations (ADHPs) Available in Bangladesh Using AAS and XRF Analytical Tools

Abstract: Widespread escalation of type 2 diabetes is a concern throughout the world. Developing countries are leading with patients suffering from diabetes-related complications. Plant-based therapeutic, antidiabetic herbal preparations (ADHPs) are being sought for long and the consumption is increasing in in Bangladesh. Plant-based antidiabetic preparations do not go through the screening procedure in terms of safety. Toxic metals in ADHPs have been investigated by two different methods: atomic absorption spectroscopy… Show more

“…Maghrabi reported similar results from different samples of herbal drugs marketed in Saudi Arabia, with the levels of Pb below the WHO permissible limit [26]. However, contrary to this finding, the concentration of lead above the WHO maximum permissible limit was reported in previous studies [12,[27][28][29][30]. Lead is one of the most toxic heavy metals and progressive exposure may cause poor muscle coordination, gastrointestinal symptoms, brain and kidney damage, hearing and vision impairments, and reproductive defects.…”

“…It regulates various biological processes like redox reactions, energy production, connective tissue formation, iron metabolism, and synthesis of neurotransmitters [9]. However, chronic exposure to a high concentration of copper causes irritation of nasal mucosa, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, kidney, and liver damage [9,30].…”

“…Metal quanti cation was done by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AA-7000, Shimadzu, Japan) [12]. The spectrophotometer was operated in different modes: ame atomizer (FA), cold vapor (CV), and graphite tube atomizer (GTA), depending on the necessity.…”

“…Affordability and availability fuel the popularity of plant-based therapeutics, where the claimed safe and harmless advertisement of the medicines due to their natural origin plays a vital role [12]. However, the safety claim is made without proper scienti c evaluation.…”
