SUMMARYThe rendering mechanism plays an indispensable role in browser-based Web application. It generates active webpages dynamically and provides human-readable layout through template engines, which are used as a standard programming model to separate the business logic and data computations from the webpage presentation. The client-side rendering mechanism, owing to the advances of rich application technologies, has been widely adopted. The adoption of client side rendering brings not only various merits but also new problems. In this paper, we propose and construct "pagelet", a segment-based template engine for developing flexible and extensible Web applications. By presenting principles, practice and usage experience of pagelet, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of possible advantages and disadvantages brought by client-side rendering mechanism from the viewpoints of both developers and end-users.

As a standard programming model for Web application development, HTML template engines (systems) are used to separate the business logic and data computations from the Web page presentation. In this paper, we present the current problems about template engines in Web application development and propose the solution: construction of an XML-based template engine for developing flexible and extensible Web applications. We explain that the approach supports the demands of users well and could reduce the cost of development. We also discuss the new opportunities brought to the effective browser cache usage, code reuse, data integration, etc.

Abstract. The MDA approach "OOHDMDA" generates servlet-based Web applications from OOHDM. An OOHDM application model, built with a UML design tool, is complemented with the recently proposed behavioral OOHDM semantics to serve as a PIM. This paper describes the transformation from a PIM XMI-file into a PSM XMI-file for a servlet-based PSM. It is performed by an XMINavigationalTransformer, which contains an XMI parser and a transformation class for each transformation rule.
