Comparison of two commercial rapid in-clinic serological tests for detection of antibodies against Leishmania spp. in dogs

Abstract: Antibodies against Leishmania spp. are detected in most dogs with clinical signs of leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum. Accurate, rapid in-clinic serological tests may permit immediate confirmation of the diagnosis and implementation of therapeutic measures. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of 2 commercial, rapid in-clinic serological tests for the detection of anti- Leishmania antibodies in sera of dogs, the Snap Canine Leishmania Antibody Test kit (IDEXX Laboratories… Show more

“…In twenty dogs, the results of qualitative RIT tests were not confirmed by quantitative serological tests due to economic restrictions. Although RIT based assays are easy to use and provide rapid results, the performance is still not optimal [ 25 , 64 , 65 ]. Furthermore, in these cases, failure to determine the level of antibodies compromises continued patient management.…”

“…So, with a 96% Se and a 98% Sp, the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) is one of the most suitable diagnostic tests. Despite the fact that IFAT is not a perfect test, it is frequently used as a reference test for the relative validation of new diagnostic methods [ 27 32 ] and to estimate the true CanL prevalence [ 33 35 ]. To assess the reliability of a new test in comparison with IFAT, the kappa coefficient is often utilized (e.g.…”

“…Dogs show nonspecific clinical manifestations of disease and the presence of clinically normal, but infected, dogs makes detection of antibodies important—not only to confirm disease but also to identify asymptomatic, infected dogs that can transmit the parasite . Serologic tests represent an important component in CL diagnosis.…”

“…Serologic tests represent an important component in CL diagnosis. The immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are the most commonly used tests, both for epidemiologic studies and in clinical practice . These tests are time‐consuming and can only be performed in specialized diagnostic laboratories.…”
