Comparison of two surgical techniques for management of intramural ureteral ectopia in dogs: 36 cases (1994–2004)

Abstract: Results of the present study suggest that although most owners of dogs that undergo surgery for treatment of intramural ureteral ectopia consider the outcome of surgery to be excellent, substantial proportions of dogs will continue to have urinary incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections after surgery. Findings do not provide any support to the hypothesis that the resection technique is superior to the ligation technique for management of dogs with intramural ureteral ectopia.

“…4,5 Anatomic anomalies that result in hydronephrosis and hydroureter in veterinary patients have rarely been documented, aside from an association with ureteral ectopia. [6][7][8][9] Not all of the reported anomalies have been associated with clinical disease. In a few previous clinical reports, [10][11][12][13] other ureteral anomalies, such as altered renal pelvic anatomy, circumcaval ureters, and congenital ureteral strictures, have been described.…”

“…We were unable to conduct a pre-operative urethral pressure profile measurement in our study. However, it is a fact that no clear relationship was found between the measurement of maximal urethral closure strength by pre-operative urethral pressure profilometry and post-operative incontinence prognosis [19] .…”

“…In neoureterostomy, surgical intervention to the distal ureteral segment can be performed while a new ureter stoma is created in the normal anatomic position. These surgical interventions can be classified as ligating the distal ureteral segment [2] , complete resection of the distal submucosal ureteral tunnel [19] or resection of the intravesical part of the distal submucosal ureteral tunnel [13] have also been described.…”
