Comparison of ultrasonography with Doppler and MRI for assessment of disease activity in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a pilot study

Abstract: Background: In juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the trend towards early therapeutic intervention and the development of new highly effective treatments have increased the need for sensitive and specific imaging. Numerous studies have demonstrated the important role of MRI and US in adult rheumatology. However, investigations of imaging in JIA are rare, and no previous study has been comparing MRI with Doppler ultrasonography (US) for assessment of arthritis. The aim of the present study was to compare the … Show more

“…Finally, we acknowledge that we did not validate the presence of US abnormalities with other imaging modalities, particularly MR. However, previous studies comparing these imaging techniques have documented that both US and MR may provide valuable information on disease activity in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis .…”

“…Previous studies have described the advantages of MRI in visualizing bone edema, bone erosions, effusion, and synovitis when using contrast enhancement 25,27 . However, in the daily routine, pediatric rheumatologists do not fully benefit from MRI because of its limited availability, time consumption, low flexibility in number of joints evaluated per session, and the need for sedation of younger children.…”
