Comparison of University of Wisconsin (UW) and Eurocollins (EC) preservation solutions in a rat liver transplant model

Abstract: Abstract. The Eurocollins (EC) and University of Wisconsin (UW) preservation solutions were compared in a rat liver transplant model. After hepatectomy, 48 rat livers were flushed with either EC or UW preservation solution and were randomly assigned to 1, 12, 24, and 30 h of preservation at 4C, resulting in eight groups each containing six livers. Following preservation, orthotopic liver transplantation with reconstruction of the hepatic artery was performed. The efficacy of the preservation solution was asse… Show more

“…Major reason of which is IR-related injury to the graft [266][267] although the mechanism of cellular involvement is similar to that of liver IR injury which have already been discussed. To prevent graft IR-related injury several trials with PGs have been carried out [268][269][270][271].…”

“…Another novel method, LRLT has been established recently which has several advantages over cadaver Tx. It not only reduces the waiting list mortality and increases the rate of Tx, but also permits pre-emptive operation before the development of serious complications associated with cirrhosis and portal hypertension [37] with a short ischemic time [266][267]. In clinical LRLT, a patient with porto-pulmonary hypertension who underwent successful LRLT and favorable Tx outcome was obtained through good hemodynamic control with long-term PGI 2 treatment with other inotropic agents [39].…”

“…The time of anhepatic phase was 17 to 20 min, as previously described (28). An ischemic period of 8 hr is long enough to induce liver and lung damage after liver transplantation and to allow high survival (29,30). This was adequate to investigate the effectiveness of the portosystemic shunt and ischemic preconditioning in liver transplantation.…”

“…We selected the 45-min preservation time period for study because it is convenient and it mimics the shortest time period for which donor livers have been stored in human OLT. The 30-hr cold preservation period was selected because it has been shown to be the longest preservation time that rat liver allografts can be stored in UW solution and survive OLT (25).…”
