Comparison of various milling technologies for grinding pharmaceutical powders

Abstract: This paper examines fine grinding techniques in current use in the pharmaceutical industry. Experimental results are given for fine grinding of vitamin C, chosen as a model substance representative of pharmaceutical products, using eight different grinding mills chosen amongst those in current use in the pharmaceutical industry. The results are evaluated in terms of product quality expressed as particle size and distribution and also in terms of operating criteria applicable in the pharmaceutical industry such… Show more

“…Many types of mills are employed in these fields and are ideally suited for wet or dry grinding processes, size reduction and dispersion, and deflocculation in solid-liquid systems [1][2][3]. When a chemical reaction is produced during milling, the process is commonly referred to as mechanochemistry, and the mill device must be considered a reactor.…”

“…The cumulative weight passing particle sizes d 20 and d 80 [44,45] are used to evaluate the width of the PSD in mineral processing, and the particle size ratio of d 80 /d 20 is often calculated for the PSD width. The particle sizes d 10 [49,50]. A decrease in these particle size ratios means a narrower PSD.…”
