Comparisons and correlations of phenolic profiles and anti-oxidant activities of seventeen varieties of pineapple

Abstract: Major phenolic, β-carotene, and ascorbic acid (AA) contents in 17 pineapple varieties were quantified and compared. Anti-oxidant activities were evaluated using 2,2-Diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing anti-oxidant power (FRAP), and metal chelating capacity (MCC) assays. MD-2 exhibited the highest AA and total phenolic (TP) contents and DPPH and ABTS assay results, but was lower in β-carotene contents. Ripley had the highest total fla… Show more

“…Figure 4 shows the chromatograms of both extracts, in which nine compounds were identified as gallic acid, hydroxytyrosol, chlorogenic acid, dihydroxicaffeic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, myricetin, and isoferulic acid, by comparing their retention time with that of standard compounds. These phenolics are some of the major phenolics reported in the literature for pineapple pulp and peel [24,74,90]. One of the main peaks observed (*) was not identified according to the used standards library.…”

“…The principle and detection conditions for each antioxidant detection method were different. Therefore, the results for various antioxidant activities were inconsistent, which has been reported in many similar studies [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. In this study, to compare the antioxidant activity of RCE, RA, and CA, the detection results of four different methods were combined for a systematic evaluation.…”

“…These chemicals represent many biological activities (Kumar et al, 2009). In particular, flavonoids have been described as the main group of phenolic compounds responsible for biological properties of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects (Du et al, 2016;Jung et al, 2015). Next, the total flavonoid content of each extract was measured.…”
