Effect of exercise duration on session RPE at an individualized constant workload

Session RPE (SRPE) permits subjective ratings of global effort following exercise. SRPE is useful for evaluating training load; however, mediating factors are not well understood. This study compared SRPE among treadmill trials at a clamped workload with a varied duration. Ten subjects (VO(2)max: 48.9 +/- 10.5 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) completed a maximal-exertion treadmill trial followed by treadmill trials of 20 (TM20), 30-(TM30), and 40-(TM40) min (counterbalanced) duration at approximately 70% individualized VO(2)max. Heart rate (HR) and acute RPE (during exercise) were recorded every 5 min with blood lactate concentration [La] recorded before initiating exercise and every 10 min throughout exercise to completion. Analyses showed no significant differences among TM20, TM30, and TM40 for mean HR, [La] or acute RPE which isolated effects of duration on SRPE. Session RPE (recorded 20 min post exercise) relative to overall (SRPEO), legs (SRPEL) and breathing (SRPEB) was analyzed using a 3 (trial) x 3 (SRPE: O, L, B) repeated measures ANOVA (alpha 0.05). There was no main effect for duration, but there was a significant main effect for SRPE type with SRPEO (4.40 +/- 2.18) greater than SRPEB (3.56 +/- 1.98) but no difference for SRPEL (4.43 +/- 2.16). Follow-up tests for within-trial differences showed no significant differences for SRPEL versus SRPEO, but blunted SRPEB estimations (vs. SRPEO and SRPEL). Primary results indicate affects of duration on SRPE are minimal. Further, within the limits of the current study, differentiating SRPE estimations do not appear advantageous; however, further work is warranted.

RESUMOIntrodução: A percepção subjetiva de esforço da sessão (PSE da sessão) é um método de fácil aplicação e de muita utilidade no contexto esportivo, sendo sugerido um período de 30 min após a sessão de treinamento para sua avaliação; no entanto, não existem dados empíricos que suportem essa sugestão. Objetivo: Verificar a correlação e a concordância entre a percepção subjetiva de esforço (PSE) média reportada durante sessões de treinamento com valores de PSE reportados 5, 15 e 30 min após o término das sessões de treinamento, em atletas de basquetebol de ambos os gêneros. Métodos: Participaram desse estudo 11 atletas do sexo feminino e nove atletas do sexo masculino. A PSE foi avaliada através da escala de PSE CR-10 a cada 20 min durante a sessão de uma hora de treinamento (PSE média da sessão) e 5, 15 ou 30 min após o término. Dessa forma, a PSE média de cada sessão de treinamento foi comparada com os valores de PSE reportados 5, 15 e 30 min após as sessões. Resultados: Não houve diferença significante da PSE média entre as três sessões. As maiores correlações foram observadas entre PSE média das sessões 2 e 3 com a PSE reportada 15 e 30 min, após para homens (r = 0,92 -0,91) e mulheres (r = 0,75 -0,82). Os maiores valores de concordância foram verificados entre a PSE média das sessões 1 e 2 e as reportadas 15 min e 30 min após para ambos gêneros. Conclusão: Com base nos resultados, sugerimos que se evite reportar a PSE 5 min após o término da sessão. Além disso, recomendamos reportar a PSE no mínimo 15 min e, sobretudo, 30 min após o término da sessão.Palavras-chave: esportes, esforço físico, frequência cardíaca. Background Early, intense rehabilitation is essential to promote recovery after stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), and traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, intensity of usual care rehabilitation interventions during inpatient rehabilitation are poorly characterized. Objective To describe the intensity of usual care rehabilitation interventions completed during the subacute phase of recovery from neurologic injury. Design Observational. Setting Inpatient rehabilitation facility. Interventions Twenty‐two usual care physical therapy interventions were grouped into six categories: gait (four activities), functional (two), strengthening (four), aerobic (six), balance (four), and wheelchair (two). Patients Patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation with a primary diagnosis of stroke, SCI or TBI within 6 months of injury. Main Outcome Measure(s) Cardiovascular intensity (physiological and perceived) was recorded during rehabilitation activity sessions. Physiological intensity was assessed by heart rate reserve (HRR) via a Polar A370 Fitness Watch and characterized as very light (<30%), light (30–39%), moderate (40–59%), vigorous (60–89%), and near maximal (≥90%). Perceived intensity was assessed using the Rating of Perceived Exertion scale. Results Patients (stroke n = 16 [number of activity sessions = 338/average session duration = 16.4 min]; SCI n = 15 [299/27.4 min]; TBI n = 15 [340/14.2 min]) participated. For patients with stroke, moderate‐to‐vigorous HRR was attained between 42% (aerobic exercise) to 55% (wheelchair propulsion) of activity sessions. For patients with SCI, moderate‐to‐vigorous HRR was attained between 29% (strength training) to 46% (gait training) of activity sessions. For patients with TBI, moderate‐to‐vigorous HRR was attained between 29% (balance activities) to 47% (gait training) of activity sessions. Associations between HRR and rate of perceived exertion were very weak across stroke (r = 0.12), SCI (r = 0.18), and TBI (r = 0.27). Conclusions Patients with stroke, SCI, and TBI undergoing inpatient rehabilitation achieve moderate‐to‐vigorous intensity during some usual care activities such as gait training. Patient perception of intensity was dissimilar to physiological response.
