Under-ventilated enclosed fires are recognized to be important scenarios, which can bring important potential risks. These phenomena occur with different ventilation conditions (natural or mechanical), providing insufficient oxygen concentration and over production of unburnt gases in the fire zone. A fullscale test has been performed using wood pallet fire. The test rig is built with marine containers. The fire occurs in a room and the smoke spreads in two other compartments. The experimental set-up provides source mass loss rate, temperatures close to the fire and in the smoke flows. Fire growth and smoke spread are detailed and analyzed. It is shown that, after an ignition period, oxygen depletion is strong in the fire room and an under-ventilated combustion occurs, and the temperatures begin to increase continuously everywhere in the compartments and in the smoke plume at the exit. CFD modeling of the fire growth has been performed by specifying the kinetic of the heat release rate (HRR) or with a simplified pyrolysis mechanism with one step. The sequence of the events, which have been observed inside the compartments during the test, is well reproduced within the CFD results. However, the comparison between calculated and observed temperatures highlights the difficulties to calculate the accurate heat release rate (HRR), its kinetic of growth and the maximum value, when the fire is in the under-ventilated regime.

Fire dynamics in a well-confined and mechanically ventilated enclosure (a configuration of interest to the nuclear industry) strongly depends on the interaction between the fuel burning rates and the intake and exhaust volume flow rates (delivered by the fans). Several experiments show that, in the under-ventilated regime, an oscillatory behaviour may be established with frequencies in the order of few mHz. This paper reports one of the first comprehensive numerical analyses performed in order to study periodic pressure and burning 1 rate instabilities for the case of a full-scale heptane pool fire, for which experimental data has not been published yet. In the numerical analysis, carried out with the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), periodic pressure and burning rate instabilities were predicted with a frequency of approximately 10 mHz. The analysis shows evidence of the correlation between the variation of ventilation flow rates (due to pressure instabilities) and the burning rate oscillations. The latter oscillations are directly linked to oscillations in the fuel burning area attributed to the ventilation-controlled conditions.

To investigate numerically the effects of geometry and location of vertical opening on the thermal and chemical fire characteristics in full-scale under-ventilated compartment fires, the ventilation factor ( ) to estimate a theoretical maximum inflow of ambient air and the mass loss rate in a heptane pool fire were fixed for all cases. It was shown that variations in door geometry affected significantly the change in thermal and chemical characteristics inside the compartment. Variations in window location resulted in the complex change in additional fire characteristics including the fire duration time and recirculating flow structure. These results were analyzed in details by the multi-dimensional flow and fire characteristics including the vent flow and fuel/air mixing phenomena.
