Compassionate Resistance: An Ethic for Pastoral Care and Counseling

Abstract: Develops an ethic for ministries of care and counseling grounded in a scriptural and theological perspective which stresses the empowering love of God and the real possibilities of human love for one another. Argues that such a scriptural and theological framework holds special power in the recovery from child sexual abuse. Proposes and explicates the notion of “compassionate resistance” and how it can serve as a dynamic witness for sexual abuse survivors.

“…Pastoral theologians thus resist when they advocate, support, encourage, empower, join, and expose. Nancy Ramsay (1998), as she reflects on an ethic for pastoral care, writes that when pastoral theologians and caregivers keep the tension between God's love and justice, they "embody God's fierce tenderness in the practice of ministry" and engage in "compassionate resistance" (p. 219). 1 Compassionate resistance seeks a "trustworthy exercise of power."…”

Is s/he inviting or leading the community of faith to consider the form(s) of pastoral resistance (Ramsay, 1998) to be directed toward those in power and to the wider community? Is her/his prophetic critique an attempt to reconcile people to God and to take steps toward reconciling with those who have suffered as a result of American interventionist policies?…”
