Compatibility of Mammalian Cells on Surfaces of Poly(dimethylsiloxane)

Abstract: This paper describes the influence of the composition of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) on the attachment and growth of several different types of mammalian cells: primary human umbilical artery endothelial cells (HUAECs), transformed 3T3 fibroblasts (3T3s), transformed osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells, and HeLa (transformed epithelial) cells. Cells grew on PDMS having different ratios of base to curing agent: 10:1 (normal PDMS, PDMSN), 10:3 (PDMSCA), and 10:0.5 (PDMSB). They were also grown on "extracted PDMS" (… Show more

“…However, these silica filler are dimethylvinylated and trimethylated silica [24], and different from the silica nanoparticles (A380 and MCM-41) used in this study. Moreover, during the curing process, the vinyl of the silica filler and the silicon hydride groups of the curing agent would undergo a hydrosilylation reaction to form a Si-C bond [24]. Therefore, it is believed that the silica nanoparticles used in this work would not interact with the silica filler, but with the whole three-dimensional PDMS network.…”

“…The biocompatibility of these materials has been extensively validated in various biomedical applications (20,21). The sufficient gas permeation of the silicone elastomer enables oxygen supply for the bacteria (22)(23)(24).…”

“…40 It is important to modify the PDMS surface property to allow for liquid perfusion as well as to enhance cell adhesion. 41 There are many ways of surface treatment on PDMS, 42,43 among which oxygen or air plasma is the easiest and most commonly used method.…”
