Compatibility of the Vocabulary in Turkish Teaching Sets as a Foreign Language B

Abstract

The lack of a common program in teaching Turkish as a foreign language increases the importance of textbooks. Textbooks often replace curricula and teaching processes are carried out according to textbooks. Workbooks are the second most widely used teaching material after textbooks in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. Workbooks: mostly in extracurricular processes, aim to repeat and reinforce what is learned in the textbooks and to give feedback to the students. The ability of students to understand the texts in the workbooks varies according to the understandable input level of the vocabulary in the texts. For this reason, the harmony of the vocabulary between the workbooks and the textbooks is very important and the content in the workbooks should be compatible with the competencies desired to be gained by the students in the textbooks. This study, which aims to examine the vocabulary compatibility in the course and workbooks used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, was planned as qualitative research. In the study, a case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was carried out and document analysis method was used to obtain the data. The study object of the study consists of the A1 course and workbooks belonging to the Yedi Iklim Turkish Teaching Set (YİTÖS) and the Istanbul Turkish Teaching Set for International Students (İTÖS), which are widely used in the field. According to the results obtained from the research, the number of different vocabularies in the YİTÖS A1 course book is 36.12% more than the number of different vocabularies in the YİTÖS A1 workbook; It has also been determined that the number of different vocabularies in the İTÖS A1 textbook is 80% more than the number of different vocabularies in the İTÖS A1 workbook. 24.69% of the number of different vocabularies in the YİTÖS workbook is not found in the YİTÖS textbook; and 17.94% of the number of different vocabularies in the ITÖS workbook is not found in the ITÖS textbook.
