Compensation of nonlinearities in a current transformer for the reconstruction of the primary current

Abstract: The measurement of the current in industrial electrical devices is often carried out by current transformers. The reliability of these devices is compromised when the measured current is higher than the nominal value, due to the saturation and hysteresis effects of the magnetic core. In this paper, a nonlinear model of the current transformer is identified by means of a separable least squares technique. This model is successfully employed for the estimation of the primary current starting from experimental me… Show more

“…Different techniques and algorithms have been proposed by different authors to overcome CT saturation and its effect on DR performance [8]- [21]. The following drawbacks are observed in their methodologies or algorithms as they  Limits the use for either offline operation or online operation only [10,16]  Consider approximate nonlinear CT model [13]  Consider approximate values of some parameters like residual flux, winding impedance, inductive burden etc [9]  Suggest to increase size of CT to accommodate DC offset, which will make it bulky and expensive [19]  Suffer from magnetic fields produced by adjacent conductor [13]  Suffer from harmonics and noise [14]  Suffer from time delay and sensitivity [11] So to overcome the above issues altogether, it is suggested to choose an alternative to CT. Rogowski Coil (RC) has attracted much attention of electric power industry as it can meet the requirements of protective relaying due to its superior performance, inherent linearity, outstanding dynamic response, wide bandwidth and no magnetic saturation [22][23]. So far RC is used as current transducer in differential and over current protection.…”

“…To express the surge current as a function, the amplitude of the frequency harmonics was extracted through the development of the 8/20 μs waveform of the standard surge wave as a Fourier series and its application to the surge analysis [3][4][5][6]. In the surge current analysis, 1,000 A and 5,000 A were applied as input currents to the primary winding of the CT before the magnetic core became saturated, and 50,000 A was also applied, at which point the magnetic core became saturated [7,8].…”

“…A nonlinear analysis is conducted using the NewtonRaphson method to consider the characteristics of the magnetic saturation of the ferromagnetic core. [6][7][8] To express lightning surge as a function, an 8/20 [µs] surge waveform was expanded in a Fourier series to extract the magnitude of harmonics by frequency. This was applied to the surge analysis.…”
