Systematic Review of Learning Generic Skills in Higher Education—Enhancing and Impeding Factors

The research field on generic skills in higher education has expanded rapidly. In addition, the importance of generic skills has been highlighted both in educational policy discourses and in practice of higher education. The present study reviews theoretical, methodological, and empirical viewpoints on learning generic skills and synthesizes the empirical evidence about the factors that enhance and impede student learning of generic skills. Altogether 116 articles were included in the analysis. The systematic analysis revealed remarkable variation in concepts, research methods, and operationalization of generic skills. These findings suggest that research in this field is still incoherent. According to the results, contextual factors that enhance or impede higher education students' learning of generic skills were investigated more often than individual factors. Furthermore, the articles included in this review emphasized learning of work-oriented professional skills over higher-order thinking skills. To ensure the development of research on generic skills, it is important to focus on more coherent theorization and operationalization of the various generic skills. More longitudinal studies with methods that genuinely capture actual skills and their development are also needed to advance the field. The results can be used for future discussions on theorization, empirical research, and practical development of student learning of generic skills.

The professional work of today's agricultural and forestry engineers is changing dramatically under the impact of the 4th industrial revolution. In that context, the competence to apply information technology (IT) is one of the core and significant competencies. Therefore, in order for training products to meet the needs of society, one of the problems that training facility for agriculture and forestry industry need to solve is to clearly identify the basic requirements for agro-forestry graduates to meet the basic requirements of IT application competence. Based on theoretical and practical research on the IT application competence of each job position and the trend of employment change in the 4.0 period, the article presents the levels of IT application competence in the agro-forestry industry. On the basis of test results and opinions of experts and employers, the article has proposed the components and required levels of IT application competence for agro-forestry students. The research results, in addition to providing information on the current state of students' IT application competence, are also a good reference source for agro-forestry training institutions to set learning outcomes, develop training programs, and innovate new training methods to promptly provide high-quality human resources for the agro-forestry industry in the context of the 4th industrial revolution.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has already taken around the world. Decision taking at industries is more and more dependent on new technologies and processes, which demand updating and adjustment of the engineering education. Through a systematized literature revision, this article aims to search, select and prioritize bibliographic sources which reflect relevant initiatives that may work as a reference for engineering bachelor´s degree courses. 50 most relevant articles were selected and analyzed from 4,333 articles published in the Scopus database. The results show the 10 main authors, the 9 main journals and the 10 main institutions among the 50 most relevant articles, as references in the analyzed sample. Regarding aspects for the improvement of engineers education, one can highlight PBL (Project-Based Learning), Competency-Based Education and focus on holistic education. This research may encourage reflection, awareness and improvement by the ones interested in the study of engineers' education, by integrating market demand, learners' expectations and academic excellence, in order to contribute to the growth of scientific and practical knowledge and of society technological development.
