Introduction: Knowledge, compliance, and attitudes toward the standard precaution guidelines are crucial to avoid contamination not only on patients but also on healthcare providers. Little is known regarding Malaysian nursing students’ knowledge, compliance, and attitudes toward standard precaution guidelines. The purpose of this study was to look into Malaysian nursing students’ knowledge, compliance, and attitudes towards standard precaution guidelines. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 337 Diploma nursing students who were chosen by simple random sampling. A self-invented questionnaire based on the CDC recommendations was administered to the participants and their responses were recorded. With a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.96, the instrument is reliable. The STROBE cross-sectional design process guideline was used as the study design. Results: Majority of the nursing students have adequate knowledge (n=222, 65.9%), adequate compliance (n=229, 68%) and good attitudes (n=171, 50.7%) with the standard precaution. The findings suggest an association between gender (p=0.005) and year of educational level (p=0.001) with the level of knowledge. There was also an association between the level of knowledge with the level of compliance (p=0.029) and the level of attitude (p=0.002) with standard precautions among the nursing students. Conclusion: Even though nearly two-thirds of the participants appeared to have adequate knowledge and compliance, only half of them have good attitudes with the standard precautions. This study indicates that although the students had adequate knowledge and compliance, measures are needed to foster compatible attitudes towards the standard precautions among the nursing students.

Background Infectious diseases are becoming more widespread and re-emerging, causing psychological, social, economic, and health effects at both national and international levels. Specialist nurses can help prevent and control these infections. However, in Iran, there are currently no specialist infection prevention and control (IPC) nurses to manage and control infections. This study aims to explore clinical and academic nurses’ attitudes toward IPC nursing curriculum and duties. Methods The study used a qualitative content analysis approach. Thirty-six participants, including clinical and academic nurses, were selected using a purposeful sampling method. Data was collected through seven focused group discussions. The accuracy and validity of the research tools were measured using the Four-Dimension Criteria developed by Lincoln and Guba. Data analysis was conducted using directed content analysis. Results The data analysis of the discussions held in the seven focus groups extracted 628 codes. Three themes were developed from the qualitative analysis: “Core characteristics of the curriculum”, “Expected competencies and skills”, and “Evaluation.” These themes were derived from nine main categories and 25 subcategories. Conclusions Specialist IPC nurses can play important roles in various positions and environments. Therefore, educational policymakers in Iran should consider establishing IPC nursing courses. It is also recommended that policymakers and decision-makers in the nursing field of other less developed countries should prioritize this issue.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) pose a significant global threat, particularly in developing regions such as Southeast Asia. International bodies emphasize the role of formal undergraduate training in the prevention and control of HAIs. To address this, we aimed to explore the perceptions of Southeast Asian nursing students regarding a novel educational approach developed by a European–Southeast Asian project consortium. Methods: A pilot study was conducted in four nursing higher education institutions from Cambodia and Vietnam. First, local nursing educators conducted a 2 h classroom-based training session. Then, students were invited to participate for the first time in one of twelve evidence-based simulation scenarios developed by the research team, covering a range of nursing care situations related to the prevention and control of HAIs. After attending both components, students were asked to complete a paper-based questionnaire and rate their agreement with a set of statements on the appropriateness and meaningfulness of both components. Results: A total of 430 nursing students enrolled in the pilot study; 77.4% were female, with an average age of 19.8 years. The PrevInf educational intervention received positive feedback from participating students across settings, with strong agreement on the importance of proactiveness in competency development (M = 5.9, SD = 1.4). Notable differences between Cambodian and Vietnamese students were observed in terms of their receptiveness to the pre-selected teaching materials (p = 0.001) and strategies (p = 0.01) used by the nursing educators during their experience with the simulation scenarios. Conclusions: The PrevInf educational intervention shows promise in engaging Southeast Asian nursing students and fostering a deeper understanding of the prevention and control of HAIs. Further studies are warranted to refine the learning content and standardize the pedagogical strategies used by nursing educators across settings. This study was not registered.
