Competency-Based Medical Education in Radiology – Planning for the Immediate and Long-Term Future of Radiology Education

Abstract

Competency-based medical education (CBME) is a major development in medical training that is being embraced worldwide. Its conceptualization, acceptance, and implementation can be traced back by over half a century. 1 The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has heralded its CBME initiative, Competence by Design (CBD), as the biggest change in residency education in the last 100 years. Although CBD was applied at a single institution in 2017, the national transition to CBD in radiology residency training programs in Canada began in July 2022 with the incoming cohort of trainees. 2 Broadly, CBME is focused on the idea that a learner's progression through a curriculum should be based on their abilities rather than time spent in training. CBD is a CBME model that has been adapted to the Canadian context. It blends time-based and outcome-based approaches and uses Can-MEDS 2015 as an organizing framework of competencies.
