Competency‐based training “Helping Mothers Survive: Bleeding after Birth” for providers from central and remote facilities in three countries

Abstract: BAB training in prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage increased knowledge and confidence among skilled and semiskilled birth attendants. Further studies are needed to determine the impact of this training on skills retention and clinical outcomes following postpartum hemorrhage, after broader implementation of the training program.

“…Having skilled attendants present during delivery has been associated with markedly reduced maternal mortality [10]; WHO and other organizations have advocated for years that this is necessary to ensure the safety of pregnant patients during the intrapartum and postpartum periods [11]. The use of simulation‐based training is becoming more common in both high‐ and low‐resource settings for training healthcare providers in maternity care [12], and it is the cornerstone of the new “Helping Mothers Survive: Bleeding After Birth” training that has recently been validated by Jhpiego [13]. Simulation training has been shown to improve management skills and reduce postpartum hemorrhage rates; however, the recognition of postpartum hemorrhage remains poor [14].…”
