“…It is no surprise that the decade ended on lively debates as to whether the authenticity of authentic texts is in the text or in the reader or both (Kramsch, 1993;Widdowson, 1990). At the end of the Cold War, the teaching of literature was the site of "competing paradigms" (Swaffar, 1989) that summarized its role throughout the century: (a) national cultural canon to be upheld with respect, (b) cognitive content to be processed with the appropriate reading strategies, (c) stylistic form with communicative function, and (d) thematic illustration of social and political issues such as ethnicity or gender. At the end of the century, literature in language teaching served many causes but it was used mostly as an authentic window on a foreign culture and society, not as the unique expression of an artist's vision of the world.…”
