“…It is no surprise that the decade ended on lively debates as to whether the authenticity of authentic texts is in the text or in the reader or both (Kramsch, 1993;Widdowson, 1990). At the end of the Cold War, the teaching of literature was the site of "competing paradigms" (Swaffar, 1989) that summarized its role throughout the century: (a) national cultural canon to be upheld with respect, (b) cognitive content to be processed with the appropriate reading strategies, (c) stylistic form with communicative function, and (d) thematic illustration of social and political issues such as ethnicity or gender. At the end of the century, literature in language teaching served many causes but it was used mostly as an authentic window on a foreign culture and society, not as the unique expression of an artist's vision of the world.…”

This article documents the changing role that literature has played in foreign language teaching as seen through the articles published in the MLJ between 1916 and 1999. Literature has been used for the aesthetic education of the few (1910s), for the literacy of the many (1920s), for moral and vocational uplift (1930s–1940s), for ideational content (1950s), for humanistic inspiration (1960s–1970s), and for providing an ‘authentic’ experience of the target culture (1980s–1990s). At the present time, although the study and the teaching of literature are virtually absent from the MLJ, ‘literariness’ in language acquisition research is far from dead. By illuminating the pervasive presence of the literary in the teaching of foreign languages over the century, this retrospective may provide support for the current interest in voice, style, and culture in applied linguistics and help this strand of research find its way in the pages of the MLJ.

Η παρούσα διατριβή πραγματεύεται την μετάδοση της Γραμματικής στα πλαίσια του μαθήματος της Γερμανικής ως ξένης γλώσσας στο ελληνικό γυμνάσιο το όποιο αποτελείται από μαθητές με ανομοιογενή χαρακτηριστικά όσον αφορά τις προϋποθέσεις της μάθησης και την γλωσσική τους ικανότητα. Η συγκεκριμένη έρευνα πραγματοποιείται σε δύο σχολεία της Αθήνας σε μαθητές της τρίτης τάξης του γυμνασίου.Για την αντιμετώπιση των χαρακτηριστικών ετερογένειας των μαθητών μέσα στην τάξη εισάγεται η έννοια της εσωτερικής διαφοροποίησης του μαθήματος (Innere Differenzierung/Binnendifferenzierung), η όποια προτείνεται ως διδακτική λύση για την αντιμετώπιση συγκεκριμένων παραγόντων ετερογένειας των μαθητών.Κύριος στόχος της έρευνας είναι να αποδειχτεί στην πράξη ότι με την εισαγωγή της εσωτερικής διαφοροποίησης στο ενιαίο (μετωπικό) μάθημα της γερμανικής γραμματικής που στηρίζεται στην επικοινωνιακή μέθοδο μπορεί να διδαχτεί με επιτυχία η γραμματική σε όλους τους μαθητές. Το επίκεντρο του ερευνητικού στόχου είναι ο ορισμός της „ταυτότητας“ του μαθητή η οποία αποτελείται από τις γλωσσικές του ικανότητες σε συνδυασμό με τις διαφορετικές στρατηγικές μάθησης που ο ίδιος χρησιμοποιεί στο μάθημα των γερμανικών. Με βάση την ταυτότητα του μαθητή και συγκεκριμένων παραγόντων ετερογένειας του, όπως ο μαθησιακός τύπος του, το μαθησιακό στιλ, το φύλο και η ικανότητα απομνημόνευσης του, λαμβάνονται τα κατάλληλα μέτρα για την επίτευξη του στόχου της συγκεκριμένης έρευνας. Η έρευνα χωρίζεται σε δύο κατευθύνσεις: σε μια αποτελεσματική διδακτική πρακτική των δίπτωτων προθέσεων (Wechselpräpositionen)-ένα γερμανικό γραμματικό φαινόμενο που μπορεί να προκαλέσει δυσκολία σε Έλληνες μαθητές- με βάση την εσωτερική διαφοροποίηση και σε επιστημονικά αποτελέσματα μέτρησης με τη βοήθεια διαφόρων επιστημονικών οργάνων (ερωτηματολόγια, τεστ ελέγχου επίδοσης και στατιστική ανάλυση). Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα και τις επιστημονικές μετρήσεις αποδεικνύεται στην πράξη ότι η εσωτερική διαφοροποίηση είναι άκρως αποτελεσματική για όλους τους εξεταζόμενους παράγοντες ετερογένειας των μαθητών καθώς οι επιδόσεις τους στο μάθημα της γραμματικής ανεβαίνει κατακόρυφα.Η έρευνα καταλήγει επίσης σε προτάσεις διαφοροποιημένου διδακτικού υλικού και σε ένα διδακτικό σενάριο μέσα στα πλαίσια της σεναριακής διδακτικής, η οποία είναι μια καινοτόμος μορφή διδασκαλίας για την αποτελεσματική προώθηση των γλωσσικών και κοινωνικών δεξιοτήτων στο ξενόγλωσσο μάθημα. Το νέο διδακτικό υλικό εσωτερικής διαφοροποίησης μπορεί να ενσωματωθεί μέσα στα πλαίσια του μαθήματος της γερμανικής ως ξένης γλώσσας στα σχολεία έτσι ώστε η ετερογένεια στις τάξεις και οι ιδιαίτερες ατομικές διαφορές να μπορούν να αντιμετωπιστούν αποτελεσματικά.
