As an archipelagic country, Indonesia needs ferry transportation to connect and support the economic activities between areas bounded by the sea. The famous crossing route is the Merak–Bakauheni one, which connects the Java and Sumatra economic corridors. Many ships operate on this route, but limited port facilities significantly affect the efficiencies of the services provided, hence, they have to be moved. Therefore, this research analyzed the suitability of ships to operate on the eastern crossing. The analysis method used the financial aspect (revenue) feasibility, the suitability of the port infrastructure, and the oceanographic conditions. The financial analysis used the ships’ operating cost method to determine the crossing passage rates based on their specifications. It simulated the ships with various load factors to identify potential gains or losses. Furthermore, the infrastructure suitability analysis used the under keel clearance and comparative methods to compare the suitability of the ship dimensions and tonnage with the port infrastructure capacity. The oceanographic analysis used the Weibull method to simulate the redefinition of the distribution of significant wave heights, which was compared with the ratio of the ship dimensions and wave slope to determine its heel angle using the IMO Weather Criterion method (IS Code 2008). The results showed that the relocation of ships from the Merak–Bakauheni route directly to Eastern Indonesia through the existing crossing routes is feasible from the aspect of shipping safety, but it is not feasible financially or in terms of infrastructure. The Benoa–Labuan Bajo route is a potential new route recommendation, with regulatory support for the operation of ships in the form of tariffs and operational costs, and it permits the use of subsidized fuel. On the other hand, ship owners must consider modifying the ramp door to suit the port wharf structure.

Complexity is discussed in design literature mainly through its negative and in some cases positive consequences. This article critically reviews and elaborates the effects of complexity on competitiveness in ship design, its directionality, and magnitude. The article introduces a model for the measurement of ship design complexity and ship design competitiveness based on predefined factors. Archival data of 100 ship design projects from eight different Norwegian designers are used as case study. Multivariate data analysis techniques are employed to study the research model. The results show a significant correlation between complexity and competitiveness in ship design, where the magnitude and directionality of influence vary among different complexity factors. Our findings provide a basis for enhancing complexity management in ship design. Introduction Continual technology improvements and market volatility with its associated uncertainties have a significant impact on and partly change ship design customers’ expectations. To be successful in such a market, not only does it require the development of competitive products but also the accompanying work processes and the organization or firm framing the development of the vessel solution are involved. Ulstein and Brett (2015) define ship design competitiveness in terms of doing the right thing (effectiveness), doing the right thing right (efficiency), and with the right resources (efficacy) to cover product, process, and firm aspects of competitiveness. To improve their success, ship design companies typically tend to focus on the introduction of new technologies, and, in some cases, extra functional capabilities, which have led to large and complex vessels over the years. To a lesser extent, ship designers have put emphasis on the overall needs of customers. Securing a higher overall performance yield of the ship design solution than peer vessels out in the market is not a common practice among ship designers; they rather focus on a typical and traditional subset of performances. The implications and the consequences of such strategies in ship design have led to a growing need for a new set of design tools and project-making skills, a more extensive design process with different disciplines involved, and many iterations in the design development process.

Intellectual capital (IC) is reckoned as a significant driving force of competitive advantage and financial sustainability of any organization. The study’s objective is to explore the nonlinear effect of IC and its components on financial performance (FP) of China’s listed shipping companies over a six-year period (2014–2019). The modified Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (MVAIC) model is used to systematically assess IC. The empirical results show an inverted U-shaped relationship between the aggregate IC and FP (measured through return on assets). Regarding IC components, human, relational, and innovation capitals have an inverted U-shaped relationship with FP, while the quadratic relationship between structural capital and FP is not significant. In addition, physical capital has a U-shaped relationship with FP. This study will offer some new insights for corporate managers to improve firms’ FP by effectively utilizing their IC resources.
