Competitiveness of banana value chain along Hetauda-Dumkibas road corridor, Nepal: An eclectic approach

Abstract: Government of Nepal has announced a super-zone of banana in Chitwan district and a block in Nawalparasi East district to enhance productivity and commercialization of banana subsector in the Hetauda-Dumkibas road corridor. This study is the first of its kind to analyze the competitive position of banana value chains in the corridor. Using the literature review approach, the paper generated a conceptual framework to assess competitiveness of value chain. A total of 160 producers, 22 traders, 3 wholesale commiss… Show more

“…In Nepal, it is cultivated in 21,633 ha of land, total production is 308,388 mt and the productivity is 15.97 mt/ha (ABPSD, 2022). Inadequate supply of quality planting materials, improper orchard management including manuring, fertilizing, and plant protection, and poor mechanization are the major problems associated with reduced yield of banana (Sharma et al, 2021).Optimal growth and fruit production of banana is highly dependent on the nutrients present in the soil. Moreira and Fageria (2009), claimed that N, P, K, Mg, and Cu have a higher rate of re-translocation in bananas and…”

Inadequate supply of quality planting materials, improper orchard management including manuring, fertilizing and plant protection and poor mechanization are the major problems associate in reduced yield of banana (Sharma et al, 2021).The vegetative growth of banana plant is dependent to the nutrient and moisture availability in the soil coupled with optimum weather condition (Guimaraes and Lima de Deus, 2021). Under moisture and plant nutrient stress condition, cropping period of banana lengthens as compared to the normal conditions.…”
