Competitiveness of the Baltic States in International High-Technology Goods Trade

Abstract: The aim of the article is to assess the international competitiveness of the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) in high-technology goods trade. To this end, Balassa’s method of analysing revealed comparative advantages (RCA) was applied. An in-depth analysis of the dynamics of RCAs in the Baltic States’ exports between 1997 and 2014 has shown that their international competitiveness in this regard is relatively low, the direct consequence of which is the growing negative trade balance in high-t… Show more

“…By using the logarithmic form of the above formula, we obtain positive or negative values of the index, which greatly facilitates their interpretation. We speak of the presence of a relative trade advantage for the goods category only when its share in total exports of a country is higher than the share of the goods category in total world exports, that is when the value of > 0 (Falkowski, 2018).…”

“…The logarithmic form of the formula ensures the symmetry of both positive and negative values of the RCA i indicators in the region around zero, which facilitates their interpretation (Falkowski, 2018;Vollrath, 1991). A revealed comparative advantage in trading in a particular commodity group is only present when the value of this indicator for the given group is greater than zero (RCA i > 0).…”

“…International competitiveness in high-technology goods is particularly essential for small and open economies, as it not only gives them the opportunity to improve their place in the international division of labour, and thus achieve faster economic growth, but it can also create a sufficient buffer against unpredictable external price shocks of labour and capital-intensive goods (Falkowski 2018;Buturac et al, 2019). Despite this fact, the trade theories are mainly focused on the effects of technology disparities (Grossman & Helpman, 1995) and not in their causes (Wolfmayr-Schnitzer, 1998).…”
