“…The United States Geological Survey reported that atrazine was the most frequently detected parent compound in the 303 wells monitored throughout the Corn Belt from 1991 to 1994 (USGS 1998). Five surface water quality studies (1983)(1984)(1985)(1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990)(1991)(1992) in the Big Blue River Basin in Nebraska and Kansas indicated that atrazine was the most frequently detected herbicide (Frankforter 1994). The presence of atrazine in our water can be attributed to the chemical's moderate water solubility (33 mg L Ϫ1 ), its moderate adsorption to soil organic matter and clay (100 to 160 ml g Ϫ1 ), and its persistence in soils (60-d average field half-life) (Ahrens 1994).…”
