Compilation of photon cross-sections: some historical remarks and current status

Abstract: In x‐ray diffraction spectrometry as well as in the many other scientific, engineering and medical disciplines involving photon radiation, x‐ray attenuation coefficients are required as input data. Within a very few years after the discovery of x‐rays by Röntgen in 1895, the transmission of a narrow (parallel) beam of x‐rays through layers of different materials was measured and quantified with respect to photon (x‐ray) energy and atomic number of the material by Barkla and Sadler in 1907. This quantification … Show more

“…Chantler 8,9 suggested that there is an uncertainty of up to a factor of 3 in the 1-3 keV region in the tabulated mass absorption coefficients, in contrast to the 5% uncertainty estimate also given recently 10 and 30% quoted in Ref. 1.…”

“…The patterns of interaction between substances and X-rays mainly include the photon effect, [15] the Compton effect, [16] and the electron-positron pair effect. [17] Because the electron-positron pair effect only occurs at high energies (threshold 1.01 MeV, domination at energies above ca.…”

“…(Here n is the areal density in at/b and σ is the cross section in b.) We were therefore tasked with measurement of the cross section at energies of 3.45, 4,5,6,8,10,12, and 14 MeV to δσ/σ<0.5% and δE/E<1% FWHM. This part of the measurement campaign is nearly complete (approximately one week of beam is still needed) for the initial set of specified materials (Be, C, Cu, Ta, W, Pb, and depleted uranium).…”

“…This is acknowledged to be the approximate uncertainty on the calculated total gamma-ray cross section. 8 Experimental data on the gamma-ray total cross section has been profuse in the region up to several hundred keV. However, data in the region of several MeV and above is quite scarce.…”
