Complementary Medicine Therapies That May Assist With Weight Loss: A Narrative Review

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to review the potential effects of traditional Chinese medicine-which includes acupuncture; electroacupuncture; plum blossom needle hammer; auricular acupuncture; herbs that balance hormones, regulate neurotransmitters, induce sedative effects, and increase thermogenesis; and functional foods that can suppress the appetite-as an adjunct therapy for weight loss. Methods: A narrative review of the current literature was performed using searches of MEDLINE and 4 scholarly … Show more

“…New approaches for URSA will be needed and available in the future; Chinese herbal medicines, which regulate human body as a whole based on the four principal diagnostic methods of inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and pulse-taking, are of great interest as complementary medicines [ 45 ]. Although it has the characteristics of complex composition and unclear mechanism, its comprehensive effect on disease, especially health care and prevention, is beyond the western medicine [ 46 ].…”

“…Our research has confirmed the therapeutic effects of EA on body weight increase and blood lipid levels in HFD-induced obese rats. Importantly, in the present research, we have clarified the neuro-immune mechanisms of EA that underlie its effect on lipolysis and thermogenesis in obese rats (Du et al, 2013;Martin, 2019). Sympathetic efferent nerves release NE, which combines with β3 adrenergic receptors in adipocytes to drive lipolysis and thermogenesis (Mattsson et al, 2011;Bartness et al, 2014).…”

“…Another interesting experimental finding is that electro-acupuncture (EA) increases cold endurance in the Stat5NKO mouse model of obesity (Fu et al, 2017). This is supported by other evidence which shows that acupuncture not only controls appetite but also increases thermogenesis, which is a mechanism for heat generation and, therefore, cold endurance (Du et al, 2013;Martin, 2019). Further research shows thermogenesis is related to PGC-1 α/UCP-1 signaling in WAT (Wang et al, 2018).…”

“…Application of medicinal plants may help to decrease body weight during obesity and other metabolic disorders (Martin, 2019;Bukvicki et al, 2020). Most often, for those purposes, the treatment involves plants of Lamiaceae family (Michel et al, 2020).…”
