Complete Genome Sequence of Mycobacterium phlei Type Strain RIVM601174

Abstract: e Mycobacterium phlei is a rapidly growing nontuberculous Mycobacterium species that is typically nonpathogenic, with few reported cases of human disease. Here we report the whole genome sequence of M. phlei type strain RIVM601174.

“…The sizes of the MPHL21000 T , MPHL43239 T , MPHL43070, MPHL43071, and MPHL43072 genomes were ≈5.3 Mbp ( fig. 1 ), which is ≈0.35 Mbp smaller than the draft genome of the M. phlei RIVM strain (MPHLRIVM; Acc: AJFJ00000000; Abdallah et al 2012 ). The Guanine-Cytosine content was calculated to be around 69.4% for all six M. phlei strains.…”

“…Although there are genomic variations comparing the six strains where MPHLRIVM differs the most, the genomes appear to be stable. The genome sizes of five M. phlei strains, including one complete genome (MPLH21000 T ), were found to be ≈5.3 Mb, which is 350 kb smaller compared with the draft MPHLRIVM genome ( Abdallah et al 2012 ). The difference in size is partly due to the presence of prophage sequences in the MPHLRIVM.…”

“…Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) were predominantly recovered from cattle with and without lesions and from Bamenda and to a lesser extent Ngaoundere and as reported elsewhere in Africa and Europe 37 38 39 . M. phlei , a saprophyte and rare pathogenic Mycobacterium 40 41 was the most recovered NTM followed by M. fortuitum in Cameroon. This rare pathogen has been previously reported in both pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB patients in Oregon in the USA and Asia although in lower proportions 42 43 .…”

“…However, Sachdeva et al (2008) report that M. smegmatis MC 2 155 and others carry separate genes that encode domains similar to those present in RsbU, RsbV, and RsbW. Likewise, Mycobacterium phlei (Abdallah et al, 2012;unpublished data) and Mycobacterium thermoresistibile lack most of the rsb genes. Thus, there seems to be no correlation between the presence or the absence of rsb genes and pathogenicity of Mycobacterium spp..…”
