Complete guidewire retention after femoral vein catheterization

Abstract: Central venous catheters (CVCs) are often used for various purposes in the emergency departments (ED). The main uses of CVCs in the EDs are emergent hemodialysis, in situations where peripheral vein catheterization cannot be achieved, and continuous invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The complications related to CVC insertion are usually mechanical and observed in the near term after the procedure. Retained CVC guidewire after catheterization is a rare complication in the published reports and usually related wi… Show more

“…Retained CVC guidewire after catheterisation is a rare complication in published reports and usually related in intra- or postoperative settings with the jugular or subclavian vein (Bakir et al 2015). Several adverse outcomes have been documented, such as shearing of the guidewire causing it to travel through the central circulation, in addition to possible bending and breaking of the introducers.…”

“…Patients who need to have the CVC inserted are mostly treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Because ICU patients are already in serious medical condition, it is very important to place the CVC successfully and without complications (Bakir et al 2015). However, the use of these catheters may be accompanied with complications during insertion, use and removal.…”

“…In this case, the guidewire was detected when it protruded through the skin to the outside of the body, which an is extremely rare occurrence. A previously described case has been reported with a similar presentation, where the guidewire protruded from the left great toe, six months after left femoral vein central line placement [11].…”

“…These cases may lead to embolization, infection, cardiac damage, or even death. [ 8 11 ] The common types of these FB are needles, [ 5 ] intravenous cannulas, [ 4 ] guidewires, [ 12 ] stents, [ 13 ] inferior vena cava filter struts, [ 14 ] and other objects (see Table 1 ). [ 6 , 7 , 15 , 16 , 17 19 ] However, being a rare pathogenic factor, the more unconventional non-iatrogenic FB often requires more extensive treatment and diagnosis.…”
