Complete Lorentz-to-Galileo dictionary for direct dark matter detection

Abstract: We determine the most general non-relativistic theory of DM-nucleon scattering complying with the sole requirement of Lorentz invariance, for spin-0 and spin-1/2 DM. To do so, we first classify a comprehensive list of amplitude terms encompassing the most general Lorentz-covariant 2-to-2 DM-nucleon scattering amplitude. We then match each term to a Galilean-invariant operator at leading-order in the non-relativistic expansion, for both elastic and inelastic (endothermic and exothermic) scattering. Our complete… Show more

“…Predictions for the expected rate of nuclear recoil events at direct detection experiments have been refined significantly in recent years, e.g. [6]. Special emphasis has been placed on modelling the "elementary" DM-nucleon interactions and computing the associated nuclear response functions [7][8][9][10].…”

“…where F µν is the electromagnetic field strength tensor and χ is the DM field, assumed here to be a Dirac particle. Such operators correspond, respectively, to magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole DM and imply a long-range interaction [66] 1 . The dimension-six operators are…”

“…Thus, the dominant one-loop interaction is the anapole moment [85]. When taking the non-relativistic limit, the anapole moment gives contributions to the O 8 and O 9 operators [86,87], which are velocity and momentum dependent. In terms of the fundamental parameters of the model, the corresponding couplings read…”
