Complete mitochondrial genome of Sinergasilus polycolpus (Copepoda:Poecilostomatoida)

Abstract: The full mitochondrial (mt) genome of Sinergasilus polycolpus is 14 000 bp in length, and it contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 1 non-coding region. The genome organization, nucleotide composition and codon usage are different compared to other Copepodas, such as Lernaea cyprinacea. The full mt genome of S. polycolpus provides useful information for further studies on epidemiology and phylogenetics.

“…Among them, S. undulatus is reported only infecting on common carp, Cyprinus carpio, and crucian carp, Carassius auratus, which are important economic fish species in China (Nie and Yao 2000). The first valid mitochondrial genome in the genus Sinergasilus Yin, 1949 is Sinergasilus polycolpus (Peng et al 2010;Feng et al 2015). Here, we assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of S. undulatus, which is the second reported one in this genus.…”

“…A comparison with the representatives of Ergasilidae with available mitogenomes, highlighted consistency in gene order. The length of rrnL in Sinergasilus polycolpus (Feng et al, 2016) appears to be shorter compared to the other species including E. kandti (668 bp vs . 878 bp).…”

“…We conduct phylogenetic analyses of all species of Ergasilidae of which molecular data are currently available. We also provide the first ergasilid whole genome sequencing reads [but see previous studies employing Sanger sequencing to obtain complete mitochondrial genome sequences, see Feng et al (2016), He et al (2023), and Hua et al (2023)], and the first complete mitogenome sequence and ribosomal operon of any African ergasilid species.…”
