We present a novel hybrid electro-optic current transformer based on a fast variable optical attenuator (FVOA) with the features of ultra-low power consumption and polarization insensitivity. An optic-electro feedback loop with a PID control algorithm is designed to compensate the nonlinearity of the FVOA. In addition, the impacts of the power drift of the optical source and variance of fiber loss have been investigated and eliminated. The transformer is built with a verified power consumption of 0.85 mW. Experiments were made in which the linearity, the robustness, the accuracy and the temperature stability of the transformer were tested. The results show that the ratio errors and the phase errors are below 0.07% and 5 min, respectively, when the primary current increased from 25 to 600 A. In addition, the maximum error drifts of 0.17% and 2.8 min were recorded over the 20 to 80 C range.

Summary Saturation of the current transformer (CT) results in maloperation of current‐dependent protective relays. While enhancing in the core area may prevent the saturation, it simultaneously increases the size, the weight, and, subsequently, the price of the CT, which is desirable for neither the CT manufactures nor the operators. This paper conducts a probabilistic analysis to investigate the impact of influential factors on CT saturation for CT dimensioning. The main aim of the probabilistic analysis is to identify the busses of the power network in which they may be highly exposed to the CT saturation phenomena. The proposed probabilistic framework is performed based on the time‐domain fault analysis. In the probabilistic time‐domain fault analysis, the effects of fault location, fault type, and fault resistance are investigated. Also, the effects of load and generation are considered probabilistically. On the basis of the selected random variables (RVs), the probability density function (PDF) of the voltage of the knee point (VKP) is obtained. Also, a new criterion so‐called depth of saturation (DofS) is introduced that shows the level of exposure to saturation phenomena for each bus. The results show that the proposed probabilistic framework helps to find a general observation to VKP of each CT from the CT‐dimensioning aspect. Also, the proposed probabilistic framework provides some useful information about the probability of saturation area in the power system.

Optical Current Transducers and Error Sources in Them: A Review

Optical current transducers are developed vastly in recent decades. For an accurate transducer achievement, different factors should be considered. This paper reviews the most important sources of errors in these devices. First, the main types of transducers are introduced. Afterwards, the effects of temperature and vibration on their operational performance are discussed. Then, the birefringence is addressed which is the main error source in the transducers. In each part, the proposed solutions in the papers are reviewed. Finally, the effect of nonideal optical parts on the measurement accuracy is discussed.
