Complex segregation analysis of Gerbera flower colour

Abstract: The distribution of hue (CIELAB colour notation) classes among flowers of the Davis population of gerbera (Gerbera jatnesonii H. Bolus ex Hooker) appears bimodal. This suggests that the genetic control of hue is determined by the segregation of a gene with large effect modified by additional genes with smaller effects. Complex segregation analysis (CSA), routinely employed in human genetic epidemiology, was used to study both qualitative and quantitative variation. CSA applies pedigree analysis through the con… Show more

“…Two objective measurements in CIELAB color space (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage, 1978) were obtained for each fruit with a CR-100 colorimeter (Minolta, Ramsey, N.J.). The CR-100 colorimeter measures the red, green, blue and total amount of light reflected from an object using an 8mm-diameter measuring area, a d/0° illuminating and viewing geometry, and illuminant C. CIELAB has been used for objective color measurements of horticultural commodities such as gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii H. Bolus ex Hooker) flowers (Tourjee et al, 1995) and strawberry (Fragaria xananassa Duch.) fruit (Sacks and Shaw, 1994).…”

“…Their distributions in the Davis population of gerbera indicate that they are continuous variables (Tourjee et a!., 1993). The variability described by these distributions is largely under genetic control (Tourjee et a!., 1995) and subject to selection. Therefore, these component traits permit the precise definition of colour phenotypes and are amenable to the procedures of biometrical genetics.…”

“…This method has been applied successfully to major gene detection in many plant species (Wang and Gai, 1997;Wang et al, 2001). Other approaches, such as complex segregation analysis (which takes advantage of transmission information from traits within pedigrees), have been widely used in humans and animals and have been extended to plant studies (Tourjee et al, 1995;Aulchenko et al, 1999). A major limitation of phenotypebased segregation analysis, however, is that it lacks sufficient statistical power to detect genes with relatively low heritability.…”
