Complex segregation and linkage analysis of familial gout in Taiwanese aborigines

Abstract: Objective. The prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia in Taiwanese aborigines is remarkably high. Although previous studies have failed to find evidence of a major gene responsible for gout, the disease is thought to involve genetic predisposition. We sought to determine whether genetic factors for familial gout exist among Taiwanese aborigines, and, if so, their chromosomal location.Methods. We first performed complex segregation analysis. The study sample comprised 945 relatives distributed in 64 pedigrees; am… Show more

“…Linguistic, archeological and genetic evidence suggests insular populations exist throughout the Pacific region, including Polynesians, Micronesians and Taiwan aborigines. [40][41][42] However, phenotype heterogeneity and the ethnic populations examined were quite different from the present study, and the results are hardly comparable.…”

“…Thus, DF/DHF has likely been misdiagnosed and illness caused by dengue virus underestimated in Nepal. In contrast, Japanese encephalitis has been a public health problem in southwestern region of Nepal, and large epidemics have occurred almost every year since 1978 (10). Nepal has no dengue surveillance programs, and health professionals do not usually consider dengue as a differential diagnosis.…”

“…inhabitants of seaside or mountain areas demonstrate disparate dietary habits due to the local availability of certain foods (e.g. saltwater fish) [19]. Thus, the incidence of gout may vary from region to region.…”

“…Alcohol, especially when consumed occasionally in large quantities, is one of the key risk factors for gout, especially gout attacks [32]. Alcohol metabolism results in lactic acid synthesis, which -by lowering the pH of bodily fluids -reduces uric acid solubility and causes its crystallization [19]. Additionally, there is an increase in hepatic metabolism of adenine nucleotide and endogenous uric acid synthesis.…”
