Complexation of Diquat by a bisparaphenylene-34-crown-10 derivative

Abstract: X-Ray structural investigations of a bisparaphenylene-34-crown-10 derivative (BPP34C10) and its 1 : 1 : 1 complex with [Diquat][PF& and H20 reveal that, of two crystallographically independent conformations (I and II) both supporting large molecular cavities, one (11) retains its gross shape on complexation and interacts with the [Diquat]2+ dication by means of hydrogen and electrostatic bonds whilst accommodating weak charge transfer interactions and a hydrogen bonded H 2 0 molecule within the docking constra… Show more

“…In BPP28C8 (Figure lb), the parallel arrangement of f-The structural formulae for the BPP(3n+4)Cn ethers are illustrated in the preceding communication (ref. 1) along with the syntheses of BPP25C7, BPP28C8, BPP37Cl1, and BPP40C12, and the solvents used in each case to grow single crystals suitable for X-ray crystallography.…”

“…The 2 + 2 adduct (D3) is interesting as its core resembles the well-known 34-Crown-10 macrocycle. 25 This compound has found wide application in the binding of electron deficient moieties such a paraquat (N,N′-dimethyl-4,4bipyridinium chloride). 26 Preliminary results support the same type of self-assembly with D3 despite the steric demands imposed by the additional ester and aromatic groups.…”
