Complexation of the Surfactants Triton X-102 and Igepal CA720 with β-Cyclodextrin

Abstract: The surfactants Igepal CA720 (IplCA7) and Triton X-102 (TX-102) and their interaction with β-cyclodextrin were studied with the use of various photophysical and photochemical methods. The fluorescence and absorbance spectra of these surfactants are concentration dependent and markedly enhanced in the presence of β-cyclodextrin. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy infers that the phenyl group of these surfactants is included inside the β-CDx cavity. The orientation of the phenyl moiety of the surfacta… Show more

“…The first band coincides with that of the monomer, and the second one arises at the cmc, increasing both of them with [NPE 5 ], which can be explained in terms of aromatic group stacking within the micellar core. A similar behavior has been observed for OPE 9 - 10 , in which the formation of micellar aggregates leads to the appearance of excimer emission . In Figure b, the fluorescence at 298 nm at different NPE 5 concentrations shows a change in the slope of the overall intensity at 0.026 mM, which matches the absorbance measurements.…”
