Complexes of tertiary phosphines and tertiary arsines with molybdenum(IV)

Abstract: The complex [MoCI,(EtCN),] reacts in dichloromethane with alkaryl and triaryl tertiary phosphines to form the paramagnetic, maroon complexes trans- [MoCI,L,] ( L = tertiary phosphine). In ethanol, however, tertiary phosphines react with the ethyl cyanide complex to yield the diamagnetic oxo-complexes, mer-[MoOCI,L,], which are also obtained directly from molybdenum pentachloride and the phosphine in ethanol. These, by metathesis, give the complexesmer-[MoOX,L,] (X = I, Br, NCS, or NCO). The oxo-complexes a… Show more

“…[35] In one case, for L = PMe 2 Ph and X = Cl, both blue and green products could be isolated, depending upon the conditions. The two species in solution exhibited identical electronic and 1 H NMR spectra (solutions of the green compound rapidly changed to blue) but did show different IR bands (for crystalline samples as Nujol mulls), at 943 and 954 cm À1 for the green and blue species, respectively.…”

“…[2] Oxo complexes of molybdenum(IV) contain the MoO 2C group and have structures derived from octahedron with very strong Mo-O t bond. The molybdenum(IV) complexes have been isolated with phosphine, [3] Schiff base, [4] phthalocyanine, [5] 1,1-dithiolate, [6] 1,2-dithiolate, [7] and isonitrile [8] ligands. In oxidation state (IV), the molybdenum complexes have both oxo and nonoxo compounds are known, but the oxo species does not dominate the chemistry of molybdenum(IV) as it does that of molybdenum(V) and molybdenum(VI).…”
