Complexity in the relationships among the subdimensions of extraversion and job performance in managerial occupations

Abstract: The present study investigated differential relationships, nonlinear relationships, and multiplicative relationships among the subdimensions of extraversion (agency and affiliation) and job performance (getting ahead and getting along) for a sample of 179 managers. We found that: (i) agency was positively related to getting ahead performance, whereas affiliation was unrelated to getting ahead; (ii) agency had an inverted-U relationship with getting along performance; and (iii) there was a multiplicative effect… Show more

“…Narrow Personality Traits. As discussed earlier, prior reviews have indicated that the Big Five may be too broad when considering individual differences correlates of composite job performance measures, specifically with regards to conscientiousness and extraversion (e.g., Hough, 1992, Minbashian et al, 2009. Consistent with the results of prior meta-analytic reviews (Dudley et al, 2006;Hogan & Holland, 2003), I propose the following hypotheses and research questions: Model of personality and dynamic criteria.…”

“…Finally, very little evidence exists suggesting that extraversion predicts job performance. However, research has argued that extraversion does not predict job performance because it is too broad, and that a focus on extraversion facets could improve the validity of this factor for predicting job performance across occupations and criteria (Hough, 1992;Minbashian, Bright, & Bird, 2009). Therefore, as extraversion is relevant within the context of the bandwidth-fidelity dilemma, I assess extraversion in the present dissertation as well.…”

“…Yet, because of averaging effects, both could appear highly similar on a global measure of extraversion. To illustrate, Minbashian, Bright, and Bird (2009) found that sociability was unrelated to either getting along or getting ahead in the workplace. In contrast, dominance was positively related to getting ahead and related in an inverted-U pattern with getting along.…”
