Compliance of asthmatic families with a primary prevention programme of asthma and effectiveness of measures to reduce inhalant allergens – a randomized trial

Abstract: High compliance was found for the use of anti-mite encasings; substantial compliance for using hypoallergenic formula, solid food postponement, keeping pets outside and reported post-natal maternal smoking. There was no compliance for sanitary measures and the reduction of maternal pre-natal passive smoking. Mite and pet allergens on mattresses were strongly reduced by anti-mite encasings.

“…Measurement of environmental exposure to HDM, cat and dog allergens was performed during pregnancy (baseline) and exactly 1 yr later. One year after baseline measurements the concentration of HDM, cat and dog allergens, measured at the living room floor (except for dog allergens), the mattress of the parents and the mattress of the baby, were statistically significant decreased in the intervention group, but not in the control group (29).…”

“…Trials ultimately selected for review can be divided into those utilizing a monofaceted, dust avoidance, approach: Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy (PIAMA) (12,(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22), Childhood Asthma Prevention Study (CAPS) (14,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27), and the National Asthma Campaign Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study ( NAC MASS) (15,(28)(29)(30)(31), and those using a multifaceted allergen avoidance approach: Isle of Wight prevention study (10,(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37), Canadian Asthma Primary Prevention Study (CAPPS) (11,(38)(39)(40)(41), Study of Prevention of Allergy in Children of Europe (SPACE) (13,42,43), and the Prevention of Asthma in Children (PREVASC) (16,(44)(45)(46)(47). Studies using a monofaceted dust avoidance approach were combined in a meta-analysis, while studies using a multifaceted approach were deemed too heterogeneous to be combined.…”
