Complication–simplification spiral in hygrothermal research

Abstract: The author reviewed reported studies related to his own hygrothermal research. The outline of the research is first described with respect to the thermal conductivity of a moist porous material, linearity and nonlinearity, extension of research object, and human thermal physiology and psychology, followed by the lessons learned from these studies. Finally, some proposals for future studies are provided, based on the obtained knowledge. This review is based on a spiral development of thought in an ideal directi… Show more

“…The complex integral approach to design is a new way to adapt the built environment to the changing world. The integration of the system approach might follow a spiral development of thinking which Hokoi employed by his hygrothermal research and described as: "Understand an issue through simplification, complicate the issue by looking at it in a complicated manner or extending the issue, and simplify the complicated issue again by looking at it with a more advanced and clearer understanding" [128] (p. 5). Consequently, with the look of an advanced and more precise understanding, the following section evaluates the process of transformation and integration of the system approach.…”

“…The relative humidity (%RH) is 73%±3%. The subjects had no history of disease on physical examination and we ensured that all subjects had rest time and regular diet 5 days before the experiment [2]. They do not consume coffee, alcohol, and other stimulants, and they wear suitable clothing to participate in the test.…”
