“…Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, it is also the largest case-series of old elbow dislocation treated with this technique (1, 2). Reporting old dislocation together with old fracture-dislocation is another weak point of our study, but it is deserving of note that it is not uncommon in other studies (4)(5)(6). To our mind, these two categories share the same principles of treatment.…”

“…Ring et al (7) reviewed 13 patients with old unreduced elbow fracture-dislocation: all the patients recovered elbow stability with an average Mayo Elbow Performance Index score of 84 and average elbow motion of 99 degrees. Potini et al (6) retrospectively reviewed 7 patients with old elbow fracture-dislocation with at least one month's delay in treatment. At least 5 of their patients had fractures interfering with elbow stability.…”

“…Egol et al 26 reported minor pin drainage in 46% of patients treated with HEF, HO in 34%, and 1 patient (3%) subluxated 2 weeks after external fixator removal. Potini et al 27 evaluated complications with HEF in chronic elbow dislocations and reported a 57% complication rate. One patient (14%) fractured through the pin site, 1 (14%) developed wound dehiscence requiring flap coverage, and 2 (28%) experienced recurrent instability.…”

“…In a study [29] of complications of hinged external xators of the elbow joint, it was pointed out that the common complications were infection (including super cial and deep infection), loosening of the xator, heterotopic ossi cation and so on. Some scholars have reported that [27,30] during functional exercise, fracture of the steel pin of the external xator and malunion of the fracture can occur. In this study, there were 3 cases of infection in the external xation stent group, all of which were super cial infections.…”
