Complications associated with ureterorenoscopy (URS) related to treatment of urolithiasis: the Clinical Research Office of Endourological Society URS Global study

Abstract: Introduction Ureterorenoscopy (URS) is a popular and growing option for management of ureteric and renal stones. The CROES URS Global Study was set up to assess the outcomes of URS in a large worldwide cohort of patients involving multiple centres. In this paper, we analysed the database for intra-operative and post-operative complications associated with ureterorenoscopy. MethodsThe CROES database was established via collaboration between 114 centres in 32 countries worldwide, and information on both intra-op… Show more

“…With further digitisation of technology, reduction in scope size and improved laser fragmentation, it seems that the uptake of URS is going to increase for paediatric patients. Similarly, its role in complex patient groups or bilateral urolithiasis is likely to continue to evolve [35,36]. Recent evidence shows that outcomes for bilateral URS procedures are at least equivalent to staged procedures, minimising cost and hospital stay [36].…”

“…The quality of included studies was poor with a high risk of bias and based mostly on small retrospective series; however, given the rarity of this condition, our review provides valuable insight, helps to condense the literature and might offer pitfalls and treatment strategies to endourologists. Although the reported complications in anomalous kidneys were higher, the rates of major complications were not different compared to URS in anatomically normal kidneys [30]. Future studies should also look at the cost comparison of the different treatment modalities [31][32][33].…”
