Parturition is a process of giving birth to young ones. This process can be naturally occurring or induced and maintained by hormonal changes. The process can also be abnormal, termed as dystocia, in which several complications are expected. Equines are long day breeders. Pre and post-parturient care is required, which is mandatory to have a beneficial, stable, and safe process of parturition. The animals in which the process of parturition is not normal, or the time has exceeded the gestation period, the chances of mortality and harm to the animal as well as the fetus increase, and the process of parturition is induced by hormones. The aims of this review include covering the process of parturition in horses and donkeys, care, complications, hormonal maintenance and safety.

Les chirurgies urogénitales femelles sont réalisées couramment et sont d’une importance économique marquée pour la reproduction équine. Les complications les plus courantes associées à ces chirurgies sont les hémorragies, les échecs de correction chirurgicale, la formation d’adhérences et enfin l’infertilité. Les chirurgies de réparation de lacérations périnéales présentent de forts risques de déhiscence de la plaie en l’absence de mesures spécifiques. Les réparations de lacérations de col quant à elles, de par les difficultés d’accès inhérentes à l’anatomie, présentent un fort risque de mauvaise correction et donc d’infertilité. Les ovariectomies sont les chirurgies où le choix de l’approche chirurgicale et la technique d’hémostase sont primordiaux afin de limiter l’apparition de complications. Enfin, lors de césariennes d’urgence, les risques majeurs d’hémorragie sont à prendre en compte dans la technique chirurgicale et la période postopératoire peut s’avérer critique pour la jument en cas de rétention des enveloppes fœtales. Afin de prévenir l’apparition de ces complications, chaque chirurgie doit être préparée en prenant en compte des considérations préopératoires, peropératoires et postopératoires particulières. La connaissance des complications permet de les prévenir et de les gérer au plus vite pour le bien-être de la jument et son avenir reproducteur.
