Composites of Perylene Chromophores and Layered Double Hydroxides: Direct Synthesis, Characterization, and Photo‐ and Chemical Stability

Abstract: Composites of the tetra‐anion of the perylene dye N,N′‐di(phenyl‐3,5‐disulfonic acid)perylene‐3,4:9,10‐tetracarboxydiimide (PBITS) with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were formed by direct synthesis (co‐precipitation at constant pH). The LDHs were of the hydrotalcite (Mg–Al–OH and Zn–Al–OH compositions). During synthesis of the hydrocalumite type (Ca–Al–OH), partial destruction of the dye occurs, being more pronounced at higher pH values. The composites were characterized with regard to their composition by … Show more

“…Most of the molar ratios of Mg:Al deviate from the initial value of 2.0 and tend to be around 2.3, which may be attributed to the difference in the dissolution equilibrium between Mg(OH) 2 and Al(OH) 3 during the hydrothermal synthesis. [ 20 ] The fi nal experimental ratio of AQS:DDS anions ( x ) is about half of the initial nominal ratio before 16.67 and is close to the initial nominal ratio after 16.67. However, the upward trend in fi nal x upon the increase of the initial AQS concentration holds throughout the whole concentration range as expected.…”

“…The samples were hydrothermally treated using microwave heating (8 hrs with a step-wise increase in temperature from 120 up to 180°C and a corresponding pressure of 2-10 bar). The crystalline phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction [20].…”

“…The chromophore molecules are stacked in J-type aggregates in the galleries between the hydroxide layers which increases chemical and photostability. [52] Penner and co-workers stabilized the Jaggregates of cyanine dyes at the molecular level by appending them to a polylysine backbone and constructing layer-by-layer assemblies with inorganic clay sheets. These three-dimensional structures have potential applications as layered systems for optical energy transfer and antenna systems.…”
