The combined effects of enterocin A with Thymus vulgaris essential oils (EOs) against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 were investigated in vitro by enumeration of surviving populations of testing pathogens and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination. Enterocin A was purified to homogeneity by RP-HPLC from the culture fluid of Enterococcus strain and thyme EOs were extracted from local Thymus vulgaris plants. The major constituent of thyme EOs oils determined by GC-MS was thymol (78.4 %). Combination of enterocin A with thyme EOs showed an enhanced bactericidal effect against Listeria monocytogenes. Checkerboard assay and isobologram construction displayed a synergistic interaction between these compounds against Listeria (FIC index <0.5). Moreover, the MIC value of enterocin A has fallen fivefold (from 4.57 to 0.9 μg/ml), while the MIC of thyme EOs decreased threefold (from 3.6 to 1.2 μg/ml). Treatments with enterocin A alone did not affect the growth of the enteric pathogen E. coli O157:H7. However, the addition of thyme EOs and enterocin A yielded a synergistic antimicrobial effect against E. coli (MIC thyme EOs decrease from 2.2 to 0.71 μg/ml). This is the first report on the combined effect of enterocin A and thyme EOs against food pathogen bacteria. This combination could be useful in food bio-preservation.

Leaves essential oils of Syzygium cumini L. Cupressus sempervirens L. and Lantana camara L., from Alexandria, Egypt were analysed by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibacterial and antioxidant activities were assessed for each oil using minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods; respectively. The main oil constitutes were α-pinene (17.53%), α-terpineol (16.67 %) and alloocimene (13.55%) in S. cumini, trans-caryophyllene (15.57%) and α-humulene (9.16%) in L. camara and cedrol (21.29%), ∆ 3 -carene (17.85%) and α-pinene (6.9%) in C. Sempervirens. The antibacterial activity was studied against some bacterial strains. The oil of S. cumini demonstrated strong inhibition activity against the tested bacterial strains. The total antioxidant activity (TAA %) was 11.13, 9.13, 3.13% for S. cumini, L. camara and C. sempervirens, respectively. Our work revealed that the studied leaf oils are new promising potential sources of antioxidants and antibacterial compounds and good future practical applications for human and plant health.

Species of the genus Lantana, belonging to the family Verbenaceae, is among the various species studied scientifically. These species are mainly native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Currently, they are present in various countries, where they are often grown as ornamental plants. For decades, species of Lantana have been of great interest for phytochemical, biological and pharmacological studies, which have been recently intensified. The components isolated from different species of Lantana cited in the literature constitute the focus of this review. Information ethnopharmacology of Lantana, as well as the activities of their different phytochemicals are discussed. In this review, it was observed that the genus Lantana has been widely studied in relation to its phytochemical components and terpenoids, flavonoids and phenylpropanoids are the more common secondary metabolites in Lantana. All these aspects, considered in this review, allow an evaluation of the ethnopharmacological potential of Lantana for the utilization of the large biomass of these plants.
