Composition and Biological Activity of Volatile Oil from Salvia judaica and S. multicaulis from Jordan

Abstract: The aim of this work was to determine the composition of the hydro-distilled essential oil of Salvia judaica Boiss. and S. multicaulis Vahl. (Lamiaceae) from Jordan by GC and GC-MS and to report the actual composition of their fresh leaves and flowers using SPME (Solid Phase Micro-Extraction).Their dual alphaamylase/alpha glucosidase and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities as well as their anti-proliferative potential were screened. The aroma profile of the leaves, flowers, and flowers at pre-flowering sta… Show more

“…The actual temperature in the MS source was 180 °C and ionization voltage was 70 eV. The temperature program employed was similar to that described in the literature . Briefly, column temperature was held constant (60 °C, isothermal) for 1 min, and then ramped to 246 °C at a rate of 3 °C/min, and finally kept constant (isothermal) at 246 °C for another 3 min.…”

“…Solid Phase Micro‐Extraction (SPME) was performed according to the procedure mentioned in the literature using the same SPME‐fiber and assemblies for manual sampling (Polydimethylsiloxane/Divinylbenzene, PDMS/DVB; df 65 μm partially cross‐linked phase, fiber length 1 cm, Supelco, Bellefonte, PA, USA). Whole aerial parts of the plant were collected, and the different organs were separated immediately for analysis.…”

“…Using the method A (preincubation of lipase with inhibitor), the RaEO exhibited promising anti-lipase activity which is comparable with that of pure THL used as a standard inhibitor against pancreatic lipase. In the same way and according to the literature, the inhibition of pancreatic lipase by the essential oil of Salvia judaica (Lamiaceae) flowers was determined colorimetrically and compared with Orlistat used as a positive control by Afifi et al [ 48 ]. The IC 50 value (0.108 mg/mL) obtained in this study was very close to that obtained with RaEO (0.2 mg/mL).…”
